What is CABG (Bypass Surgery)?

Coronary artery bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass graft (CABG, pronounced "cabbage") surgery, and colloquially heart bypass or bypass surgery, is a surgical procedure to restore normal blood flow to an obstructed coronary artery.

Who needs a bypass surgery?

People with severe forms of Coronary Artery Heart Disease (blockage in the arteries of the heart) require CABG.

It is a very safe and very succesful procedure in the hands of experience cardiac surgeons. The risk of bypass surgery is not more or worse than other forms of therapy like stenting generally.

How do they do heart bypass surgery?

A surgeon takes blood vessels from another part of your body to go around, or bypass, a blocked artery. The result is that more blood and oxygen can flow to your heart again.

What is the difference between on-pump and off-pump coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery?

Beating heart bypass surgery (off-pump) is different from traditional bypass surgery (on-pump) because it is performed while your heart is still beating. A surgeon does not use a Heart-lung machine to stop the beating of the heart during the procedure.

What kind of food can you eat after open heart surgery?

Eat a variety of healthy foods. Choose foods low in fat and cholesterol. Eat less salt or sodium. Cut back on sugar and sweets. Eat more proteins and fiber ("roughage"). Limit portion sizes.

How much bed rest do I need after CABG?

CABG in itself does not necessesitate any bed rest. Complete recovery takes about 4-6 weeks.One can return to work as soon as feasible.
